On Saturday, April 21st, Yu Ying families along with volunteers from HandsOn Greater DC Cares, FutureProof, American University, and SavATree celebrated Earth Day by building edible gardens, planting flowers, and restoring natural habitats on Yu Ying’s campus.
With the help of FutureProof and SavATree, volunteers from HandsOn Greater DC Cares, including many from the DC Chapter of Indiana University’s Alumni Association, worked to restore natural habitats of the school’s western acre, helping it become a woodland classroom for our students. At the same time, Yu Ying families and other volunteers helped create an edible garden and planted flowers and other plants around the campus. Because of their help, the northern end of our campus now has raised flower beds and a stage!
Hawthorne Homemade and Revolution Foods generously provided healthy and sustainable snacks to families and volunteers. Children participated in green crafts such as pressed flower petal paper making and wildflower “seed bomb” construction.
It was a magnificent event where the community came together to build a green campus and celebrate Earth Day. Thank you to everyone’s efforts!

On Thursday, February 9th, Washington Yu Ying Public Charter School celebrated the move to its new, permanent home at 220 Taylor Street NE with a Grand Opening ceremony. Yu Ying has been running high-quality Mandarin Chinese immersion programs that utilize the International Baccalaureate Program curriculum for District students since 2008, but this school year represents the first year that our school has held classes in the newly renovated building, originally built in 1902.
Yu Ying took the opportunity to show, firsthand, how far the school has come with the support and hard work of all those in attendance. The program included student performances, remarks from the Executive Director of DC Public Charter School Board Scott Pearson as well as presentations from Yu Ying’s Board Chair Lisa Chiu, Executive Director Mary Shaffner and Principal Maquita Alexander. Following the presentation, guests participated in a traditional Chinese Lion Dance performance and were then taken on small group tours of our building to see improvements to the facility and witness the students engaging in Yu Ying’s unique blend of language immersion and rigorous academic programing.
In attendance were a number of charter school supporters, Office of the State Superintendent of Education staff, DC government representatives and local community members. Also present were members of Eagle Bank, which helped finance additional funds for the construction and representatives from Russell Sears & Associates and Eichberg Construction, architect and general contractor, respectively, for the new school building.

Mr. Scott Pearson, Executive Director of the District of Columbia Public Charter School Board |
