After 5 years of studying Mandarin with their peers, members of the 5th grade class are finally getting the opportunity to use their language skills firsthand. Last week, students, parents and administrators arrived in Beijing to begin a trip that will take them to schools in several cities, where the students will be able to interact directly with their peers in China. In addition to meeting students at elementary schools in China, the group will visit four cities (Beijing, Xi'an, Suzhou and Shanghai) and a number of historical sites, over the course of the next two weeks. Throughout the trip, students will be collecting their experience in pictures and words, then reflecting on what they learned when they return to school.
This trip could not have been made possible without the amazing support of our board and parent community in fundraising and planning for this amazing opportunity. Additionally, we would like to thank ISE (Intercultural Student Experiences), a nonprofit which helped us organize logistics and homestays for the trip.

We are proud to announce the authorization of Washington Yu Ying as an International Baccalaureate World School! Yu Ying has been working to achieve this status since our beginning, more than 5 years ago. We are now part of a consortium of schools, spread across the globe, working to create a better world through education. The IB values their hard-earned reputation for quality, high standards and pedagogical leadership. We are thrilled to have our own work towards such rigor be recognized through our certification. Learn more about the International Baccalaureate Organization and the PYP Programme. Please join the school in thanking Amy Quinn, founder and PYP Coordinator, and all our teachers for their outstanding work as we moved through the certifciation process. Additionally, congratulations go to the whole school team and the Board of Trustees for all their incredible effort to make this a reality! |

Earlier this morning, all of the hard work put in by families, teachers, staff and the school administration on Yu Ying's application to the Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools program finally paid off! At a ceremony held at Mundo Verde Public Charter School, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Yu Ying is a 2013 Green Ribbon School and officially one of the greenest schools in the country! This is really a testament to the hard work that everyone has put into renovating our building and continuing to bring more and more environmental/green curriculum into the classroom. Thank you to everyone who assisted in planting gardens, setting up recycling programs, using green energy and all the other things that helped us win!
The complete announcement can be found here, but here's a highlight from today's announcement:
“Today’s honorees are modeling a comprehensive approach to being green,” said Secretary Arne Duncan. “They are demonstrating ways schools can simultaneously cut costs; improve health, performance and equity; and provide an education geared toward the jobs of the future. In fact, the selected districts are saving millions of dollars as a result of their greening efforts. And the great thing is that the resources these honorees are using are available for free to all schools."
A report with highlights on the 78 honorees can be found here.
Thank you so much for all your help and here's to continuing to work on sustainability, heath and wellness at Yu Ying! Congratulations to DC's other 2013 Green Ribbon Schools: Mundo Verde Public Charter School and Woodrow Wilson High School!

Our school recently entered into a partnership with Groundswell (a DC nonprofit that serves as an energy agrigator) and FOCUS, to buy entirely sutainable energy to power our building. As a part of the "Community Power Project", Yu Ying is able to buy energy from green, sustainable sources through our membership in the group, which works together to purchase sustainable energy. The participating institutions are able to purchase clean energy through Renewable Energy Credits (REC), which support the development of wind and solar energy development around DC and in the rest of the country. Not only is this an amazing partnership because of the obvious environmental benefits, but it will also allow Yu Ying to leverage the collaborative purchasing power of a larger group, thus saving money by providing energy at a reduced rate when compared to buying from traditional utilities as a single customer.
We are incredibly excited to enter into this partnership and welcome this opportunity to share with our students about the importance of sustainable energy and going green!
