From day one, when Yu Ying opened our doors to the first 130 students in 2008, we were the only public or private school of our kind in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.  Demand for Yu Ying’s innovative program has grown every year since, resulting in more than 1,000 applications each year.

Yu Ying’s New Early Learning Campus

Yu Ying will open a new early learning campus in Fall 2024 to serve more than 300 PK3-K learners. The new location is walking distance (.2 miles) from our Taylor Street campus, which will continue to serve 1st-5th graders.

Our construction is under a tight timeline and tracking towards the end of August 2024. We are actively planning for contingency/swing space in the event of a delay. However if swing space is utilized, it would be for an older grade, and PK3-K students would remain at our Taylor Street campus.

Applying to Yu Ying

To enroll in Yu Ying, families must first apply through a lottery.  Yu Ying participates in My School DC common application and common lottery.  This means that Yu Ying accepts only those applications submitted through My School DC.

The My School DC common lottery is a single, random lottery that determines placement for new students at all participating schools. Student-school matches are based on a variety of factors, including the number of spaces at each school; sibling, and other preferences; and each student’s choices. Below is a helpful video explaining how My School DC selects students:

For more information about the common application and common lottery, please see My School DC FAQ.

Siblings of current Yu Ying and DCI students may receive enrollment preference to Yu Ying if those siblings meet the following criteria. The sibling:

  • Is related by blood to either one parent or both parents of the current sibling; OR
  • Is adopted by one or both parents of the current sibling; OR
  • Is a step sibling (related through the marriage of current student and step sibling); AND
  • Lives with the current student at least 50 percent of the time and the home they share is in Washington, D.C., and attend the same school for at least one year together.

Equitable Access Preference: Yu Ying Is Open to All!

Yu Ying is proud to be one of 11 DC public charter schools to offer equitable access preference. This means Yu Ying will set aside a certain number of seats for students who are considered at risk. These students have a better chance of being matched with Yu Ying if they pick the school as a top choice in the My School DC lottery. This is just like how a sibling preference works.

DC defines at-risk students as those who:

  • Are experiencing homelessness.
  • Are in the DC foster care system.
  • Qualify for government benefits such as SNAP or TANF.

You can learn more about the My School DC lottery at myschooldc.org. The application deadline for fall 2022 is March 1, 2022. We’d love for you to pick Yu Ying as your #1 choice!
